The Orissa State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) is a joint venture undertaking of the Government of India and the state Government of Orissa, constituted in 1974 under the Road Transportation Act 1950.
The OSRTC provides road transportation facilitates for passengers in the state of Orissa, which has a population of 36,706,920.The corporation operates 150 buses from the state capital Bhubaneswar to the headquarters of the districts and beyond carrying thousands of passengers daily on 150 routes.
Care is taken to provide bus service to people living in the under-developed and remote areas of the state. The corporation provides concessional travel facilities to the students, handicapped, freedom fighters etc. The state has also a large number of private buses operating in the populous areas. The corporation acts as a regulator in the enforcement of passenger fares fixed by the government for the benefit of the public. The corporation endeavours also to provide amenities of better standards to the passengers at the bus stands and enroute.
The Corporation runs three types of bus services. The Corporation also provides facility of chartered buses on contract to help tourists visit places within the state and in different parts of the country. The OSRTC is now in the process of restructuring to meet the new situations arising out of privatisation, withdrawal of monopoly operations on specific routes, competition from private bus operators, small vehicles etc.
The work force of the corporation is 3,400 and the number is going to be reduced further due to the down sizing of the employees who are surplus with the condemnation and disposal of nearly 700 buses during the recent years.
The operations are carried out from 32 units apart from the establishments like two central workshops, central stores, two printing presses and head office. The main bus stands are located at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Samabalpur, Berhampur, Jeypore, Rourkela etc. At these bus stands the Corporation has provided shopping complexes, restaurants, retiring rooms, banks, passenger conveniences etc.
The performance of the Corporation compares well with the All India norms e.g. providing bus services at one of the cheapest fares of the country, accident free operations for which the Corporation got awards in the past etc. Attention is also being given for the proper maintenance, repairs and replacement of spares to make the journeys trouble free as well as pollution free.
